Soil can be classified as dead, damaged or over fertilized soil, either
due to salt buildup from chemical fertilizers, contamination from road
salt or other material, or over compaction. This type of soil has
little of the organic material or microscopic life that is essential
for plant growth. Lack of soil structure can also make this soil prone
to erosion from water and wind.
In short, soil is this sad condition will struggle to support plants of any type.
The Solution for Lifeless Soil
Adding more chemical fertilizers only adds to the problem, and,
contrary to popular belief, is not the solution. The soil structure
must be repaired and organic matter added to begin to create an
environment in which plants can thrive.
| Specific recommendations include:
-
Introduce a soil penetrant to break apart compacted soil so that air and water can circulate.
-
Add a soil conditioner to coat soil products to keep them from re-compacting and retain water and food near plant roots.
-
Encourage the development of the microscopic web of life essential to plant success.
-
Add the food and minerals that both plants and beneficial micro-life need to thrive.
