All soils are made up of small particles, varying in both size and texture. Sandy soil particles are relatively large, with lots of space in between them. This means that soils comprised mostly of sand tend to drain well, but water disappears quickly taking nutrients with it, often leaving little to support your plants' needs.
 
Sandy soils provide less than ideal environments for lush gardens and lawn. While pooling water isn't a concern, the lack of consistent moisture and sufficient nutrients are. Additionally, without much organic material to improve soil structure, sandy soils are loose and offer limited physical support. This makes erosion and wind damage ongoing concerns.
 
Fertilizers aren't the answer; numerous studies have shown that adding large amounts of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium - the three elements you find noted as NPK on most fertilizer packages – actually reduces the organic material in soils, deteriorating the soil structure further.

The addition of organic material is widely recommended to improve sandy soils.

Soil Optimizer may be broadcast by hand or spread with a hand held or push rotary spreader (rather than the drop style) using a #3 setting.
